after Emotional Technlogy came out - BT was asked what he thought of people copying (influence by) his style - and he replied something like, "yeah, that's cool if they want to do that - i'm onto the next thing".

the next thing, as he hinted at more than a year ago, was surround sound. in one interview he started talking about these piddley little monitors, and how easy it was to setup up surround monitoring with them.

so, what's the big deal? well, the thing with doing a surround mix, and particularly with BT getting excited about it, is that there really is no accepted theory about how to do a surround mix. so that statement is exactly what BT is fixing to make.

let's back up. before stereo become the standard (much like MP3's today) a number of "superior" speaker arrangements were tried, and failed, such as quadraphonics sound. for stereo - there are lot of standards; bass, kick and snare in the center (and/or a hair off center) and then ensuring each instrument has its own sonic space. you can be a purist and setup the drum kit in the stereo field according to the way you see it from the house looking at the stage (hat on the right, low tom on the left) - or, if it's a drummer mixing, it's often the way you see it from the drum throne, (hat on the left, low tom on the right).

today, the reigning surround format for do-it-yourself project studio's and above is DTS. DTS kicks ass. DTS is a lossless codec that encodes six channels (sufficient for 5.1) of 16 bit quality audio onto a 24-bit stereo channel.

ok, so back to what BT is doing. there is a, sort of obvious, approach to mixing movies in surround - you put aural cues where the visuals call for them. but there is no accepted standard for how to mix MUSIC in surround. i've heard the Eagles reunion DVD in surround - and for instance, they put the shakers and string pads in the rear channels. oooh. are you picking up the sarcasm here? the point is - yeah, its cool to separate those channels - but does that mean the orchestra and percussionist is sitting BEHIND you? like i said, no cohesive theory exists for how to mix music in surround.

August 29th - all that will change.

uh ga-ga-ga...

I'll be throwing away my iPod and moving into your studio on August 29. And wearing my BT t-shirt continuously, until it falls off my body.
